Chapter 95: Rāma Describes Mandākinī’s Beauty to Sītā
Text 2.95.2
अब्रवीच्च वरारोहां चारुचन्द्रनिभाननाम्।
विदेहराजस्य सुतां रामो राजीवलोचनः॥
abravīc ca varārohāṁ cāru-candra-nibhānanām
videha-rājasya sutāṁ rāmo rājīva-locanaḥ
abravīt = spoke [as follows]; ca = and; varārohām = whose hips were wide; cāru-candra-nibha-ānanām = whose face as lovely as the charming moon; videha-rājasya sutām = to the princess of Videha; rāmaḥ = Rāma; rājīva-locanaḥ = and the lotus-eyed.
And the lotus-eyed Rāma spoke [as follows] to the princess of Videha whose hips were wide and whose face as lovely as the charming moon.
Rāma spoke to her because of her beauty. With this in mind, [the author describes her as one] “whose hips were wide.” Her face was [now] as lovely as the moon because it blossomed out of excitement upon seeing the forest and mountain that indicated the enjoyment of amorous sports. Rāma has been described as lotus-eyed here because His eyes were [now] wide open with astonishment.
