manye ’ham āgato ’yodhyāṁ bharato bhrātṛ-vatsalaḥ

śrutvā pravrājitaṁ māṁ hi jaṭā-valkaladhāriṇam

manye aham = I think; āgataḥ ayodhyām = upon returning to Ayodhyā from His maternal uncle’s house; bharataḥ = Bharata; bhrātṛ-vatsalaḥ = who is affectionate to His brothers; mama prāṇāt = than My very life; priyataraḥ = is dear to Me; kula-dharmam = the dharma of our dynasty; anusmaran = remembering; śrutvā = He would have heard; pravrājitam = that I have been exiled; mām hi jaṭā-valkaladhāriṇam = that I wear matted locks of hair and bark clothes; jānakyā sahitam = with Jānakī; vīra = O heroic; tvayā ca = and You; puruṣa-ṛṣabha = prince; snehena = by affection for Me; ākrānta-hṛdayaḥ = His mind would have been overcome; śokena = with distress due to My exile; ākulita-indriyaḥ = and His heart would have been agitated; draṣṭum = to see [Us]; abhyāgataḥ hi = come; eṣaḥ = He has; bharataḥ na anyathā āgataḥ = Bharata has not come for any other purpose.

O heroic prince, Bharata who is affectionate to His brothers is dearer to Me than My very life. Upon returning to Ayodhyā from His maternal uncle’s house, He would have heard that I wear matted locks of hair and bark clothes and that I have been exiled with Jānakī and You. Remembering the dharma of our dynasty, His mind would have been overcome by affection for Me and His heart would have been agitated with distress due to My exile. I think that He has come to see [Us]. Bharata has not come for any other purpose.

The dharma of their dynasty was to coronate the eldest [son of the king as the crown prince]. “Bharata has not come for any other purpose” means “Bharata has not come as My opponent.”
