Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 97: Rāma Instructs Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.97.28
अवतीर्य तु सालाग्रात्तस्मात्स समितिंजयः।
लक्ष्मणः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा तस्थौ रामस्य पार्श्वतः॥
avatīrya tu sālāgrāt tasmāt sa samitiñjayaḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ prāñjalir bhūtvā tasthau rāmasya pārśvataḥ
avatīrya tu = got down; sāla-agrāt = from the top of that sāla tree; tasmāt = and; saḥ samitiñjayaḥ = the conqueror of His enemies; lakṣmaṇaḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā = with His palms joined in supplication; tasthau = stood; rāmasya = to rāma; pārśvataḥ = next.
Lakṣmaṇa, the conqueror of His enemies, got down from the top of that Sāla tree and stood next to Rāma with His palms joined in supplication.
“The conqueror of His enemies” indicates that [Lakṣmaṇa] was ready [to meet Bharata]. He stood next [to His brother Rāma] out of fear that some danger might come upon Him.
