Chapter 97: Rāma Instructs Lakṣmaṇa
Text 2.97.31

सा चित्रकूटे भरतेन सेना धर्मं पुरस्कृत्य विधूय दर्पम्।
प्रसादनार्थं रघुनन्दनस्य विराजते नीतिमता प्रणीता॥

sā citrakūṭe bharatena senā
dharmaṁ puraskṛtya vidhūya darpam
prasādanārthaṁ raghu-nandanasya
virājate nītimatā praṇītā

= the; citrakūṭe = near Citrakūṭa; bharatena = Bharata; senā = army; dharmam = dharma; puraskṛtya = following; vidhūya = had caused to shed and; darpam = its pride; prasādana-artham = to please; raghu-nandanasya = Rāma, the beloved of the Raghus; virājate = the army looked splendorous; nītimatā = who knew moral principles; praṇītā = brought it.

Following dharma, Bharata who knew moral principles had caused the army to shed its pride and brought it near Citrakūṭa to please Rāma, the beloved of the Raghus. The army looked splendorous.

Bharata knew moral principles, that is, He knew that if the army had blockaded [Rāma’s āśrama], He would be unhappy. Bharata followed dharma, that is, He followed the principle of honoring a king while dressed in plain attire.
