Chapter 98: Bharata Locates Rāma’s Āśrama
Text 2.98.13
कृतकार्यमिदं दुर्गं वनं व्यालनिषेवितम्।
यदध्यास्ते महातेजा रामः शस्त्रभृतांवरः॥
kṛta-kāryam idaṁ durgaṁ vanaṁ vyāla-niṣevitam
yad adhyāste mahā-tejā rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ
kṛta-kāryam = is successful; idam = this; durgam = impenetrable; vanam = forest; vyāla-niṣevitam yat = resorted to by evil snakes; adhyāste = resides here; mahā-tejāḥ = of great glory; rāmaḥ = [because] Rāma; śastrabhṛtām = of those who wield weapons; varaḥ = the foremost.
This impenetrable forest resorted to by evil snakes is successful [because] Rāma of great glory, the foremost of those who wield weapons, resides here.
1 It is too lowly a residence for so glorious a person. This is the point.
The reason for the success of the forest is stated in the second half of the verse.
Because the forest is impenetrable, it is naturally unfit for residence. Besides, Rāma is of great glory, and from this perspective also, the forest is unfit for [His] residence.1
