Chapter 99: Bharata Meets Rāma
Text 2.99.11
इदं चोदात्तदन्तानां कुञ्जराणां तरस्विनाम्।
शैलपार्श्वे परिक्रान्तमन्योन्यमभिगर्जताम्॥
idaṁ codātta-dantānāṁ kuñjarāṇāṁ tarasvinām
śaila-pārśve parikrāntam anyonyam abhigarjatām
idam = this must be the path; ca = and; udātta-dantānām = large tusked 1; kuñjarāṇām = tusked elephants; tarasvinām = where swift large; śaila-pārśve = by the mountain; parikrāntam = traverse; anyonyam = at each other; abhigarjatām = roaring.
And this must be the path where swift large tusked elephants traverse by the mountain roaring at each other.
Out of great anger, these elephants would forcefully attack each other with their [large] tusks and because of this it would have been impossible to reach the āśrama. Therefore, these marks of identification set by Lakṣmaṇa indicated the path to the vicinity of Rāma’s āśrama.
