Chapter 102: Rāma Performs Śrāddha for King Daśaratha
Text 2.102.20
आनयेङ्गुदिपिण्याकं चीरमाहर चोत्तरम्।
जलक्रियार्थं तातस्य गमिष्यामि महात्मनः॥
ānayeṅgudi-piṇyākaṁ cīram āhara cottaram
jala-kriyārthaṁ tātasya gamiṣyāmi mahātmanaḥ
ānaya = bring; iṅgudi-piṇyākam = an oilcake made from iṅgudī seeds; cīram = a bark cloth; āhara = bring; ca = and; uttaram = an upper garment; jala-kriyā-artham = to offer water; tātasya = to Our father; gamiṣyāmi = I will go [to the river]; mahā-ātmanaḥ = a great soul.
Bring an oilcake made from iṅgudī seeds. Bring a bark cloth and an upper garment. I will go [to the river] to offer water to Our father, a great soul.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa: gamiṣyāmi nadīṁ pratīti śeṣaḥ.
When the oil is not removed from the seeds of an iṅgudī tree and they are crushed into powder and made into round cakes, it is referred to as an oilcake. This is food for the ascetics [residing in the forest].
The bark cloth was to be worn [by the Lord as a lower] garment while performing the ritual of giving water [to His father].
