Chapter 104: Bharata Beseeches Rāma to Rule the Kingdom

आर्यं तातः परित्यज्य कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम्।
गतः स्वर्गं महाबाहुः पुत्रशोकाभिपीडितः॥
āryaṁ tātaḥ parityajya kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram
gataḥ svargaṁ mahā-bāhuḥ putra-śokābhipīḍitaḥ
āryam = You, noble Rāma; tātaḥ = Our father; parityajya = banished; kṛtvā = and performed; karma = deed; suduṣkaram = an extremely difficult; gataḥ = departed; svargam = to Svarga; mahā-bāhuḥ = the mighty-armed king; putra-śoka-abhipīḍitaḥ = tormented by distress on account of his son.
Our father banished You, noble Rāma, and performed an extremely difficult deed. Tormented by distress on account of his son, the mighty-armed king departed to Svarga.
The extremely difficult deed was handing over the kingdom due to his eldest son to his younger son on the request of a woman.
GLOSS. The king was tormented by distress on account of his son, that is, by distress that his son had gone to the forest.
