यदब्रवीन्मां नरलोकसत्कृतः पिता महात्मा विबुधाधिपोपमः।
तदेव मन्ये परमात्मनो हितं न सर्वलोकेश्वरभावमप्यहम्॥
yad abravīn māṁ nara-loka-satkṛtaḥ
pitā mahātmā vibudhādhipopamaḥ
tad eva manye param ātmano hitaṁ
a sarva-lokeśvara-bhāvam apy aham
yat = what; abravīt = has told; mām = Me; nara-loka-satkṛtaḥ = and who was honored in the world of men; pitā = Our father; mahātmā = who was a great soul; vibudha-adhipa-upamaḥ = equal to the lord of the devas; tat eva manye = think that; param = most; ātmanaḥ = to Me; hitam = is beneficial; na = not; sarva-loka-īśvara-bhāvam api = rulership over all the worlds; aham = I.
I think that what Our father, who was a great soul equal to the lord of the devas and who was honored in the world of men, has told Me is most beneficial to Me, not rulership over all the worlds.
NOTE. Here Lord Rāma demonstrates detached and persistent adherence to His scriptural duties. What happens to a person who engages in such duties in such a manner? That is clarified by the Lord Himself in Bhagavad-gītā (5.10) thus:
brahmaṇy ādhāya karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā karoti yaḥ
lipyate na sa pāpena padma-patram ivāmbhasā
“One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus leaf is untouched by water.”
