Chapter 105: Rāma Consoles Bharata With Spiritual Instructions
Text 2.105.39
एते बहुविधाः शोका विलापरुदिते तथा।
वर्जनीया हि धीरेण सर्वावस्थासु धीमता॥
evaṁ bahu-vidhāḥ śokā vilāpa-rudite tathā
varjanīyā hi dhīreṇa sarvāvasthāsu dhīmatā
evam = such; bahu-vidhāḥ = of many kinds; śokāḥ = sorrow; vilāpa-rudite = lamentation and crying; tathā varjanīyāḥ hi = should give up; dhīreṇa = one who is sober; sarva-avasthāsu = under all circumstances; dhīmatā = and intelligent.
One who is sober and intelligent under all circumstances should give up such sorrow of many kinds, lamentation and crying.
1 Meaning Bharata should not disagree with Rāma’s exile from Ayodhyā on the order of Their father.
“Sorrow of many kinds” refers to sorrow over Daśaratha’s death, Rāma’s exile and so on.
From the next verse onwards, Rāmacandra tells Bharata that He should honor Rāma’s exile [from Ayodhyā].1
