Chapter 106: Bharata Persists in His Request
Text 2.106.24
हीनबुद्धिगुणो बालो हीनः स्थानेन चाप्यहम्।
भवता च विनाभूतो न वर्तयितुमुत्सहे॥
hīna-buddhi-guṇo bālo hīnaḥ sthānena cāpy aham
bhavatā ca vinā-bhūto na vartayitum utsahe
hīna-buddhi-guṇaḥ = I am devoid of good intelligence and qualities; bālaḥ = I am young; hīnaḥ = inferior; sthānena = by position; ca = and; api = even; aham = I; bhavatā ca = You; vinā-bhūtaḥ = without; na vartayitum utsahe = don’t want to be [in the kingdom].
I am devoid of good intelligence and qualities. I am young and inferior by position. I don’t even want to be [in the kingdom] without You.
Bharata speaks this verse while anticipating that Rāmacandra might ask, “How can You say that You are young? We are both equal [in age]. How older am I than You?”
[Since Bharata doesn’t even want to be in the kingdom without Rāma,] where is the question of Him ruling over the kingdom? This is implied here.
