Chapter 108: Jābāli Speaks the Philosophy of Materialism
Text 2.108.7

पित्र्यं राज्यं परित्यज्य स नार्हसि नरोत्तम।
आस्थातुं कापथं दुःखं विषमं बहुकण्टकम्॥

pitryaṁ rājyaṁ parityajya sa nārhasi narottama
āsthātuṁ kāpathaṁ duḥkhaṁ viṣamaṁ bahu-kaṇṭakam

pitryam = inherited from Your father; rājyam = the kingdom; parityajya = giving up; saḥ na arhasi = You don’t deserve; nara-uttama = O prince; āsthātum = to resort; kāpatham = to this inappropriate; duḥkham = miserable; viṣamam =and contemptible path; bahu-kaṇṭakam = filled with various disturbances.

Giving up the kingdom inherited from Your father, O prince, You don’t deserve to resort to this inappropriate, miserable and contemptible path filled with various disturbances.

“This path” refers to the path of vānaprastha life unsuited for youth.
