Chapter 109: Rāma Refutes Jābāli
Text 2.109.1
जाबालेस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा रामः सत्यात्मनां वरः।
उवाच परया भक्त्या स्वबुद्ध्या चाविपन्नया॥
jābāles tu vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ satyātmanāṁ varaḥ
uvāca parayā bhaktyā sva-buddhyā cāvipannayā
jābāleḥ tu = Jābali’s; vacaḥ = words; śrutvā = upon hearing; rāmaḥ = Rāma; satya-ātmanām = of those whose intelligence is fixed on the truth; varaḥ = the best; uvāca = spoke; parayā = with supreme; bhaktyā = reverence to Vedic dharma; sva-buddhyā ca = using His intelligence; avipannayā = that was not even slightly agitated.
Upon hearing Jābāli’s words, Rāma, the best of those whose intelligence is fixed on the truth, spoke with supreme reverence to Vedic dharma using His intelligence that was not even slightly agitated.
In this chapter, Rāma refutes Jābāli’s ideology and establishes the Vedic ideology.
GLOSS. [The glossator reads buddhyāvipratipannayā instead of sva-buddhyā cāvipannayā indicating that] Rāma’s intelligence did not oppose the Vedas and so on.
