Canto 2 -
Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa
Chapter 110: Vasiṣṭha Requests Rāma to Accept the Throne
Text 2.110.24
असमञ्जस्तु पुत्रोऽभूत्सगरस्येति नः श्रुतम्।
जीवन्नेव स पित्रा तु निरस्तः पापकर्मकृत्॥
asamañjas tu putro ’bhūt sagarasyeti naḥ śrutam
jīvann eva sa pitrā tu nirastaḥ pāpa-karmakṛt
asamañjaḥ tu = Asamañja; putraḥ = a son named; abhūt = had; sagarasya iti = Sagara; naḥ = we have; śrutam = heard that; jīvan eva = even when he was alive; saḥ = he; pitrā tu = by his father; nirastaḥ = was banished; pāpa-karmakṛt = [for] he indulged in sinful deeds.
“We have heard that Sagara had a son named Asamañja. He was banished by his father even when he was alive [for] he indulged in sinful deeds.
GLOSS. “He indulged in sinful deeds” means “he portrayed himself as one indulging in sinful deeds” because Śrī Bhāgavatam states that he showed the citizens their sons by dint of his mystic power.
