Chapter 117: Anasūyā Instructs Sītā About Strī-dharma
Text 2.117.7
पत्नीं च समनुप्राप्तां वृद्धामामन्त्र्य सत्कृताम्।
सान्त्वयामास धर्मज्ञः सर्वभूतहिते रतः॥
patnīṁ ca samanuprāptāṁ vṛddhām āmantrya satkṛtām
sāntvayām āsa dharmajñaḥ sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ
patnīm = his wife; ca = and; samanuprāptām = when she arrived; vṛddhām = was old; āmantrya = he called for her; satkṛtām = and respected by all; sāntvayām āsa = and spoke the following kind words; dharmajñaḥ = sage Atri knew dharma; sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ = and was engaged in the welfare of all creatures.
Sage Atri knew dharma and was engaged in the welfare of all creatures, and his wife was old and respected by all. When she arrived, he called for her and spoke the following kind words.
GLOSS. Sāntvayām āsa indicates that he made her happy by asking about her welfare and so on.
