फलमूलाशनैर्दान्तैश्चीरकृष्णाजिनाम्बरैः।
सूर्यवैश्वानराभैश्च पुराणैर्मुनिभिर्वृतम्॥
phala-mūlāśanair dāntaiś cīra-kṛṣṇājināmbaraiḥ
sūrya-vaiśvānarābhaiś ca purāṇair munibhir vṛtam
phala-mūla-aśanaiḥ = who only ate fruits and roots; dāntaiḥ = they controlled their minds and senses; cīra-kṛṣṇa-ajina-ambaraiḥ = wore clothes of bark and dark deer skin; sūrya-vaiśvānara-ābhaiḥ = shone with the effulgence of the sun and fire; ca = and; purāṇaiḥ = with old; munibhiḥ = sages; vṛtam = it had.
It had old sages who only ate fruits and roots. They controlled their minds and senses, wore clothes of bark and dark deer skin and shone with the effulgence of the sun and fire.
1 Some were as brilliant as the sun while some were as brilliant as fire. This is an indication of a spiritual gradation among the sages there.
“They shone with the effulgence of the sun and fire” indicates that there were grades of sages [there]. Therefore two comparisons have been made here.1
