Chapter 2: Rāma Encounters the Rākṣasa Virādha
Text 3.2.10
युवां जटाचीरधरौ सभार्यौ क्षीणजीवितौ।
प्रविष्टौ दण्डकारण्यं शरचापासिधारिणौ॥
yuvāṁ jaṭā-cīradharau sabhāryau kṣīṇa-jīvitau
praviṣṭau daṇḍakāraṇyaṁ śara-cāpāsidhāriṇau
yuvām = both of You; jaṭā-cīradharau = wearing matted locks of hair and dresses of bark; sabhā-āryau1 = who are noble souls in assemblies; kṣīṇa-jīvitau = with reduced lifespans; praviṣṭau = have entered; daṇḍakāraṇyam = Daṇḍakāraṇya; śara-cāpa-asidhāriṇau = and holding arrows, bows and swords.
With reduced lifespans, both of You who are noble souls in assemblies have entered Daṇḍakāraṇya wearing matted locks of hair and dresses of bark, and holding arrows, bows and swords.
1 Technical note: sabhāyām āryau sabhāryau.
The rākṣasa implies that the lifespans of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are reduced because [he thinks that] They would be killed by him. He implies that it is extremely difficult for one who has entered that forest to [continue] living.
