Chapter 2: Rāma Encounters the Rākṣasa Virādha
Text 3.2.15
तां दृष्ट्वा राधवः सीतां विराधाङ्कगतां शुभाम्।
अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणं वाक्यं मुखेन परिशुष्यता॥
tāṁ dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ sītāṁ virādhāṅka-gatāṁ śubhām
abravīl lakṣmaṇaṁ vākyaṁ mukhena pariśuṣyatā
tām = the; dṛṣṭvā = noticing; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava’s; sītām = Sītā; virādha-aṅka-gatām = on the lap of Virādha; śubhām = auspicious; abravīt = and He spoke; lakṣmaṇam = to Lakṣmaṇa; vākyam = the following words; mukhena = face; pariśuṣyatā = dried up.
Noticing the auspicious Sītā on the lap of Virādha, Rāghava’s face dried up and He spoke the following words to Lakṣmaṇa.
Rāghava’s face dried up, that is, it shrivelled due to sorrow.
