Chapter 6: The Sages Inform Rāma About the Rākṣasas Torturing Them
Text 3.6.21
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु काकुत्स्थस्तापसानां तपस्विनाम्।
इदं प्रोवाच धर्मात्मा सर्वानेव तपस्विनः॥
etac chrutvā tu kākutsthas tāpasānāṁ tapasvinām
idaṁ provāca dharmātmā sarvān eva tapasvinaḥ
etat = these [words]; śrutvā tu = upon hearing; kākutsthaḥ = the descendant of Kakutstha; tāpasānām = of the sages; tapasvinām = engaged in very excellent austerities; idam = the following; provāca = spoke; dharma-ātmā = of dhārmika intelligence; sarvān eva = to all; tapasvinaḥ = the ascetics.
Upon hearing these [words] of the sages engaged in very excellent austerities the descendant of Kakutstha who possessed dhārmika intelligence spoke the following to all the ascetics.
नैवमर्हथ मां वक्तुमाज्ञप्तोऽहं तपस्विनाम्।
केवलेनात्मकार्येण प्रवेष्टव्यं मया वनम्।
विप्रकारमपाक्रष्टुं राक्षसैर्भवतामिमम्॥
