परा त्वत्तो गतिर्वीर पृथिव्यां नोपपद्यते।
परिपालय नः सर्वान्राक्षसेभ्यो नृपात्मज॥
parā tvatto gatir vīra pṛthivyāṁ nopapadyate
paripālaya naḥ sarvān rākṣasebhyaḥ nṛpa-ātmaja
parā = other; tvattaḥ = than You; gatiḥ = shelter; vīra = O hero; pṛthivyām = in all the worlds; na = no; upapadyate = there is; paripālaya = protect; naḥ = of us; sarvān = all; rākṣasebhyaḥ = from the rākṣasas; nṛpa-ātmaja = O prince.
O hero, there is no shelter other than You in all the worlds! O prince, protect all of us from the rākṣasas!
1 This is a part of the Puruṣa-sūkta. The statement preceding this is—tam evaṁ viditvāmṛta iha bhavati: “Having known Him, one becomes immortal here.” In this statement, “having known Him” means “Having known, having understood and having realized.” This is clear from the Govinda-bhāṣya on Vedānta-sūtra 3.4.12. One cannot attain liberation if he does not know, understand and realize the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Pṛthivyām (literally meaning “on earth”) [actually] means “in all the worlds.” In this regard, the Śruti declares:
nānyaḥ panthā ayanāya vidyate
“There is no other way to attain [freedom from miseries].”1 (Taittirīya Āraṇyaka 3.12.7)
GLOSS. [The sages intended to state:] “Because there is no shelter other than You in the world, protect [all of us from the rākṣasas].”
