Chapter 8: Śrī Rāma Departs From Sutīkṣṇa’s Āśrama
Text 3.8.3-4

अथ तेऽग्निं सुरांश्चैव वैदेही रामलक्ष्मणौ।
काल्यं विधिवदभ्यर्च्य तपस्विशरणे वने॥

उदयन्तं दिनकरं दृष्ट्वा विगतकल्मषाः॥
सुतीक्ष्णमभिगम्येदं श्लक्ष्णं वचनमब्रुवन्॥

atha te ’gniṁ surāṁś caiva vaidehī rāma-lakṣmaṇau
kālyaṁ vidhivad abhyarcya tapasvi-śaraṇe vane

udayantaṁ dinakaraṁ dṛṣṭvā vigata-kalmaṣāḥ
sutīkṣṇam abhigamyedaṁ ślakṣṇaṁ vacanam abruvan

atha = then; te agnim = the sacred fire; surān = Nārāyaṇa and His associates; ca eva = and; vaidehī = Vaidehī; rāma-lakṣmaṇau = Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; kālyam = at the right time; vidhivat = and in accordance with the scriptural regulations; abhyarcya = worshipped; tapasvi-śaraṇe = at the residence of the ascetic; vane = in the forest; udayantam = the rising; dinakaram = sun; dṛṣṭvā = after seeing; vigata-kalmaṣāḥ = and [having become] free from impurities; sutīkṣṇam = Sutīkṣṇa; abhigamya = the approached; idam = the following; ślakṣṇam = gentle; vacanam = words; abruvan = and spoke.

Then Vaidehī, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa worshipped the sacred fire, Nārāyaṇa and His associates, at the right time and in accordance with the scriptural regulations at the residence of the ascetic in the  forest. After seeing the rising sun and [having become] free from impurities, they approached Sutīkṣṇa and spoke the following gentle words.

Surān [literally means “the demigods” but here it] means “Nārāyaṇa and His associates” because the Ayodhyā-kāṇḍa (Canto 2) states:

gate purohite rāmaḥ snāto niyata-mānasaḥ
saha patnyā viśālākṣyā nārāyaṇam upāgamat

“When the priest had departed, Rāma bathed. Then, accompanied by His wide-eyed wife Sītā-devī, with a fixed mind, He approached Lord Nārāyaṇa.” (Rāmāyaṇa 2.6.1)

Tapasvi-śaraṇe (“at the residence of the ascetic”) indicates that the worship was in accordance with place.

It is inferred that descendants of Raghu followed the ritualistic codes of Kātyāyana because meditation on the sun takes place according to these codes after the homa.
