अविषह्यातपो यावत्सूर्यो नाति विराजते।
अमार्गेणागतां लक्ष्मीं प्राप्येवान्वयवर्जितः॥
तावदिच्छामहे गन्तुमित्युक्त्वा चरणौ मुनेः।
ववन्दे सहसौमित्रिस्सीतया सह राघवः॥
aviṣahyātapo yāvat sūryo nātivirājate
amārgeṇāgatāṁ lakṣmīṁ prāpyevānvaya-varjitaḥ
tāvad icchāmahe gantum ity uktvā caraṇau muneḥ
vavande saha-saumitriḥ sītayā saha rāghavaḥ
aviṣahya-ātapaḥ = of intolerable heat; yāvat = as long as; sūryaḥ = the sun; na ativirājate = the sun doesn’t blaze too brightly; amārgeṇa āgatām = through unrighteous means; lakṣmīm = prosperity; prāpya = who has attained; iva = is like; anvaya-varjitaḥ = an evil master devoid of saintly association; tāvat icchāmahe = we wish; gantum = to go; iti uktvā = having said this; caraṇau = unto the feet; muneḥ = of the sage; vavande = offered obeisances; saha-saumitriḥ = Lakṣmaṇa; sītayā saha = and Sītā; rāghavaḥ = Rāghava.
“The sun, whose heat is intolerable, is like an evil master who is devoid of saintly association and who has attained prosperity through unrighteous means. We wish to go as long as the sun doesn’t blaze too brightly.” Having said this, Rāghava, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā offered obeisances unto the feet of the sage.
Rāma wanted to depart before the sun rises too much.1 This indicates that He was eager to slay Rāvaṇa. Therefore the comparison [of the sun to an evil master] is not wrong.2
GLOSS. “As long as the sun doesn’t blaze too brightly” means “as long as the sun doesn’t burn [us with its heat].”
