Chapter 9: Sītā Requests Rāma to Give up His Weapons
Text 3.9.2
अयं धर्मस्सुसूक्ष्मेण विधिना प्राप्यते महान्।
निवृत्तेन तु शक्योऽयं व्यसनात्कामजादिह॥
ayaṁ dharmaḥ susūkṣmeṇa vidhinā prāpyate mahān
nivṛttena tu śakyo ’yaṁ vyasanāt kāmajād iha
ayam = this; dharmaḥ = dharma; susūkṣmeṇa = by extremely fine; vidhinā = process of deliberation; prāpyate = can be carried out; mahān = great; nivṛttena tu = by a man who desists; śakyaḥ = can be executed; ayam = it; vyasanāt = from calamities; kāmajāt = born out of passion; iha = in this forest.
This great dharma can be carried out by extremely fine process of deliberation. It can be executed in this forest by a man who desists from calamities born out of passion.1
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: vyasanam iti jātyeka-vacanam.
“This great dharma” carried out by Rāma was the dharma of the sages. Those who desire this dharma can carry it out [only] through the extremely fine process of deliberation. That process of deliberation is stated in the second half of this verse.
What are the calamities [born out of passion]? She states them in the next verse.
