Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 9: Sītā Requests Rāma to Give up His Weapons
Text 3.9.28
तदार्य कलुषा बुद्धिर्जायते शस्त्रसेवनात्।
पुनर्गत्वा त्वयोध्यायां क्षत्रधर्मं चरिष्यसि॥
tadārya kaluṣā buddhir jāyate śastra-sevanāt
punar gatvā tv ayodhyāyāṁ kṣatra-dharmaṁ cariṣyasi
tadā1 ārya = my noble lord; kaluṣā = a contaminated; buddhiḥ = intelligence; jāyate = one develops; śastra-sevanāt = by using weapons; punaḥ gatvā tu = after we return; ayodhyāyām = to Ayodhyā; kṣatra-dharmam = the dharma of a kṣatriya; cariṣyasi = You can execute.
My noble lord, by using weapons one develops a contaminated intelligence. After we return to Ayodhyā, You can execute the dharma of a kṣatriya.
1 Technical note: tadā jāyate.
If by using weapons one develops a contaminated intelligence, is Rāmacandra supposed to set aside His varṇa-dharma? She answers this question in the second half of this verse.
