Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 9: Sītā Requests Rāma to Give up His Weapons
Text 3.9.29

अक्षया तु भवेत्प्रीतिः श्वश्रूश्वशुरयोर्मम।
यदि राज्यं परित्यज्य भवेस्त्वं निरतो मुनिः।।

akṣayā tu bhavet prītiḥ śvaśrū-śvaśurayor mama
yadi rājyaṁ parityajya bhaves tvaṁ nirato muniḥ

akṣayā = inexhaustible; tu = also; bhavet = will attain; prītiḥ = happiness; śvaśrū-śvaśurayoḥ = parents-in-law; mama = my; yadi = if; rājyam = the kingdom; parityajya bhaveḥ = abandon; tvam = You; nirataḥ = and become absorbed; muniḥ = in the activities of a sage.

My parents-in-law will also attain inexhaustible happiness if You abandon the kingdom and become absorbed in the activities of a sage.1

She now talks about another benefit to be attained by simply engaging in austerities. She suggests that He fully give up the dharma of a kṣatriya and take shelter of the activities of a sage. Tu which means “also” here indicates that she thinks, “Your intelligence will become free from contamination.” She refers to Kaikeyī and Daśaratha as her parents-in-law here.

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: tuḥ samuccaye.
