Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 10: Rāma Asserts His Unbreakable Resolution to Fulfill His Promises
Text 3.10.4

मां सीते स्वयमागम्य शरण्याः शरणं गताः।
ते चार्ता दण्डकारण्ये मुनयः संशितव्रताः॥

māṁ sīte svayam āgamya śaraṇyāḥ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ
te cārtā daṇḍakāraṇye munayaḥ saṁśita-vratāḥ

mām = unto Me; sīte = Sītā; svayam = themselves; āgamya = they came forward and; śaraṇyāḥ = [though] were worthy objects of surrender; śaraṇam gatāḥ = surrendered; te ca = they; ārtāḥ = when were in distress; daṇḍakāraṇye = in Daṇḍakāraṇya; munayaḥ = the sages; saṁśita-vratāḥ = [because] sharply adhered to their vows.

Sītā, [though] the sages in Daṇḍakāraṇya were themselves worthy objects of surrender, they came forward and surrendered unto Me when they were in distress [because] they sharply adhered to their vows.

GLOSS. In some manuscripts, saṁsita-vratāḥ is found instead of saṁśita-vratāḥ indicating that the sages’ vows were obstructed. It is implied that their spiritual activities were not carried out because of the disturbances caused by the rākṣasas.
