Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 10: Rāma Asserts His Unbreakable Resolution to Fulfill His Promises
Text 3.10.5

वसन्तो धर्मनिरता वने मूलफलाशनाः।
न लभन्ते सुखं भीता राक्षसैः क्रूरकर्मभिः॥

vasanto dharma-niratā vane mūla-phala-aśanāḥ
na labhante sukhaṁ bhītā rākṣasaiḥ krūra-karmabhiḥ

vasantaḥ = while living; dharma-niratāḥ = absorbed in dharma; vane = in the forest; mūla-phala-aśanāḥ = and only eating roots and fruits; na = no; labhante = they attain; sukham = happiness;  bhītāḥ = [because] they are frightened; rākṣasaiḥ = of rākṣasas; krūra-karmabhiḥ = who engage in cruel deeds.

Absorbed in dharma while living in the forest and only eating roots and fruits, they attain no happiness [because] they are frightened of rākṣasas who engage in cruel deeds.

These features of the sages loudly reveal the Lord’s partiality towards those who have surrendered unto Him.
