प्रसीदन्तु भवन्तो मे ह्रिरेषा हि ममातुला।
यदीदृशैरहं विप्रैरुपस्थेयैरुपस्थितः।
किं करोमीति च मया व्याहृतं द्विजसंनिधौ॥
prasīdantu bhavanto me hrīr eṣā hi mamātulā
yat īdṛśair ahaṁ viprair upastheyair upasthitaḥ
kiṁ karomīti ca mayā vyāhṛtaṁ dvija-sannidhau
prasīdantu bhavantaḥ = please be favorable; me = to Me; hrīḥ eṣā = ashamed; hi = indeed; mama = I am; atulā = greatly; yat = that; īdṛśaiḥ = like you; aham = I; vipraiḥ = brāhmaṇas; upastheyaiḥ = who are meant to be approached [for help]; upasthitaḥ = have been approached [for help]; kim = what; karomi iti = should I do; ca = and; mayā = I; vyāhṛtam = asked; dvija-sannidhau = in the presence of the twice-born.
“Please be favorable to Me! Indeed, I am greatly ashamed that I have been approached [for help] by brāhmaṇas like you who are meant to be approached [for help].” And in the presence of the twice-born, I asked, “What should I do?”1
1 Vyāhṛtam literally means “uttered.” Here it contextually means “asked.”
1 By His superexcellent conduct, Lord Rāma teaches us how to deal with His saintly devotees in nonduplicitous humility. The Lord considers that the situation which necessitated the sages taking help from Him to become free from the rākṣasas to be due to some offense of His!
“Please be favorable to Me” means “Please forgive My offense.”1
