Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 12: Agastya Requests Rāma to Protect the Sages
Text 3.12.52
मया न तारितो राजा स्वगुणैरेव तारितः।
स्वर्गं दशरथः प्राप्तः स्वकृतैः पुण्यकर्मभिः॥
mayā na tārito rājā sva-guṇair eva tāritaḥ
svargaṁ daśarathaḥ prāptaḥ sva-kṛtaiḥ puṇya-karmabhiḥ
mayā = by Me; na = not; tāritaḥ = has been delivered; rājā = the king; sva-guṇaiḥ eva = by his own good qualities; tāritaḥ = he has been delivered; svargam = the heavens; daśarathaḥ = King Daśaratha; prāptaḥ = has attained; sva-kṛtaiḥ = performed by him; puṇya-karmabhiḥ = by dint of the pious acts.
The king has not been delivered by Me. He has been delivered by his own good qualities. King Daśaratha has attained the heavens by dint of the pious acts performed by him.
NOTE. By giving all credit to His father without taking any credit for Himself, here Lord Rāmacandra demonstrates His opulence of patience, which is described by Prabhupāda as follows in his purport to Bhagavad-gītā 10.34:
When one is fully qualified yet is humble and gentle, and when one is able to keep his balance both in sorrow and in the ecstasy of joy, he has the opulence called patience (kṣamā).
