Chapter 14: Śrī Rāma Meets Jaṭāyu
Text 3.14.2
तं दृष्ट्वा तौ महाभागौ वटस्थं रामलक्ष्मणौ।
मेनाते राक्षसं पक्षिं ब्रुवाणौ को भवानिति॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā tau mahābhāgau vaṭasthaṁ rāma-lakṣmaṇau
menāte rākṣasaṁ pakṣiṁ bruvāṇau ko bhavān iti
tam = the; dṛṣṭvā = upon seeing; tau = the; mahā-bhāgau = greatly opulent; vaṭastham = on the banyan tree; rāma-lakṣmaṇau = Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa; menāte = thought; rākṣasam = that he was a rākṣasa; pakṣim = bird; bruvāṇau = and asked him; kaḥ = who; bhavān iti = are you.
Upon seeing the bird on the banyan tree, the greatly opulent Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa thought that he was a rākṣasa and asked him, “Who are you?”
Jaṭāyu was [sitting] on the banyan tree that Agastya had spoken of.
