Chapter 16: Lakṣmaṇa’s Description of Winter
Text 3.16.4
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तः प्रियो यस्ते प्रियंवद।
अलङ्कृत इवाभाति येन संवत्सरः शुभः॥
ayaṁ sa kālaḥ samprāptaḥ priyo yas te priyaṁvada
alaṅkṛta ivābhāti yena saṁvatsaraḥ śubhaḥ
ayam saḥ = the; kālaḥ = time; samprāptaḥ = has arrived; priyaḥ = and dear; yaḥ = which; te = to You; priyaṁvada = O Rāma whose speech is pleasant; alaṅkṛtaḥ = decorated; iva ābhāti = appears to be; yena = and due to which; saṁvatsaraḥ = the year; śubhaḥ = is auspicious.
O Rāma whose speech is pleasant, the time which is auspicious and dear to You, and due to which the year appears to be deco-rated, has arrived!
“The time” is winter.
