Chapter 16: Lakṣmaṇa’s Description of Winter
Text 3.16.5

नीहारपरुषो लोकः पृथिवी सस्यशालिनी।
जलान्यनुपभोग्यानि सुभगो हव्यवाहनः॥

nīhāra-paruṣo lokaḥ pṛthivī sasya-śālinī
jalāny anupabhogyāni subhago havya-vāhanaḥ

nīhāra-paruṣaḥ = become hard in skin because of the cold; lokaḥ = men; pṛthivī = the land; sasya-śālinī = becomes beautiful with crops; jalāni = water; anupabhogyāni = cannot be enjoyed [by bathing]; subhagaḥ = becomes very dear [now]; havya-vāhanaḥ = fire.

Men become tough in skin because of the cold. The land becomes beautiful with crops. Water cannot be enjoyed [by bathing]. Fire becomes very dear [now].

[Such] a statement of the nature [of winter] is [a form of literary] ornamentation 1.
