Chapter 16: Lakṣmaṇa’s Description of Winter
Text 3.16.16

बाष्पच्छन्नान्यरण्यानि यवगोधूमवन्ति च।
शोभन्तेऽभ्युदिते सूर्ये नदद्भिः क्रौञ्चसारसैः॥

bāṣpa-cchannāny araṇyāni yava-godhūmavanti ca
śobhante ’bhyudite sūrye nadadbhiḥ krauñca-sārasaiḥ

bāṣpa-channāni = are covered with mist; araṇyāni = the forests; yava-godhūmavanti = [fields] of barley and wheat; ca = and; śobhante = shine; abhyudite = rises; sūrye = when the sun; nadadbhiḥ = while they cry out loud; krauñca-sārasaiḥ = amidst the krauñcas and sārasa swans.

The forests are covered with mist, and [fields] of barley and wheat shine when the sun rises amidst the krauñcas and sārasa swans while they cry out loud.
