Chapter 16: Lakṣmaṇa’s Description of Winter
Text 3.16.24
बाष्पसंछन्नसलिला रुतविज्ञेयसारसाः।
हिमार्द्रवालुकैस्तीरैः सरितो भान्ति साम्प्रतम्॥
bāṣpa-sañcchinna-salilā ruta-vijñeya-sārasāḥ
himārdra-vālukais tīraiḥ sarito bhānti sāmpratam
bāṣpa-sañcchinna-salilāḥ = their waters are covered by mist; ruta-vijñeya-sārasāḥ = and the cranes can [only] be recognized by their sounds; hima-ardra-vālukaiḥ tīraiḥ = with their sand banks with ice; saritaḥ = the rivers; bhānti sāmpratam = are now visible.
The rivers are now visible with their sand banks with ice. Their waters are covered by mist and therefore the cranes can [only] be recognized by their sounds.1
