Chapter 18: Śūrpaṇakhā Disfigured
Text 3.18.1

ततः शूर्पणखां रामः कामपाशावपाशितम्।
स्वच्छया श्लक्ष्णया वाचा स्मितपूर्वमथाब्रवीत्॥

tataḥ śūrpaṇakhāṁ rāmaḥ kāma-pāśāvapāśitām
svacchayā ślakṣṇayā vācā smita-pūrvam athābravīt

tataḥ = in that leaf cottage; śūrpaṇakhām = to Śūrpaṇakhā; rāmaḥ = Rāma; kāma-pāśa-avapāśitām = who was bound by the ropes of lust; svacchayā = [the following] explicit; ślakṣṇayā = and gentle; vācā = words; smita-pūrvam = smiled and; atha = after she [thus] spoke; abravīt = spoke.

After she [thus] spoke in that leaf cottage, Rāma smiled and spoke [the following] explicit and gentle words to Śūrpaṇakhā who was bound by the ropes of lust.

This chapter describes the deformation of Śūrpaṇakhā that angered Khara.
