Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 18: Śūrpaṇakhā Disfigured
Text 3.18.2
कृतदारोऽस्मि भवति भार्येयं दयिता मम।
त्वद्विधानां तु नारीणां सुदुःखा ससपत्नता॥
kṛta-dāro ’smi bhavati bhāryeyaṁ dayitā mama
tvad-vidhānāṁ tu nārīṇāṁ suduḥkhā sasapatnatā
kṛta-dāraḥ = accompanied by My wife; asmi = I am; bhavati = lady; bhāryā = wife; iyam = this is; dayitā = beloved; mama = My; tvat-vidhānām tu = like you; nārīṇām = for women; suduḥkhā = is extremely miserable; sa-sapatnatā = living with a co-wife.
Lady, I am accompanied by My wife.1 This is My beloved wife. Living with a co-wife is extremely miserable for women like you.
Dayitā indicates that because Sītā-devī was cherished [by Lord Rāma], He should not give her up.
Śrī Rāmacandra then anticipated that Śūrpaṇakhā might request Him to behave as a dakṣiṇa [hero] who equally loves His many [heroines]: tulyo ’nekatra dakṣiṇaḥ.1 With this in mind, He speaks the second line of this verse.
