Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 18: Śūrpaṇakhā Disfigured
Text 3.18.5
एनं भज विशालाक्षि भर्तारं भ्रातरं मम।
असपत्ना वरारोहे मेरुमर्कप्रभा यथा॥
enaṁ bhaja viśālākṣi bhartāraṁ bhrātaraṁ mama
asapatnā varārohe merum arka-prabhā yathā
enam = here; bhaja = accept; viśāla-akṣi = wide-eyed; bhartāram = as your husband; bhrātaram = brother; mama = My; asapatnā = [and] you will not have a co-wife; vara-ārohe = and beautiful lady; merum = [that touches] Meru; arka-prabhā = the sunlight; yathā = like.
Wide-eyed and beautiful lady, accept My brother here as your husband like the sunlight [that touches] Meru [and] you will not have a co-wife.
It is inferred that her eyes were round and wide.
In this manner, out of compassion Lord Rāma spoke jokingly to the woman who had approached Him due to passionate delusion while considering that if He immediately censured her, she would become distressed.
