Chapter 18: Śūrpaṇakhā Disfigured
Text 3.18.18
तां मृत्युपाशप्रतिमामापतन्तीं महाबलः।
निगृह्य रामः कुपितस्ततो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्॥
tāṁ mṛtyu-pāśa-pratimām āpatantīṁ mahā-balaḥ
nigṛhya rāmaḥ kupitas tato lakṣmaṇam abravīt
tām = her; mṛtyu-pāśa-pratimām = who resembled the noose of death; āpatantīm = and who flew [towards Sītā]; mahā-balaḥ = the greatly powerful; nigṛhya = restraining; rāmaḥ = Rāma; kupitaḥ = became angry; tataḥ = and; lakṣmaṇam = Lakṣmaṇa; abravīt = told [the following].
Restraining her who resembled the noose of death and who flew [towards Sītā], the greatly powerful Rāma became angry and told Lakṣmaṇa [the following].
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: nigṛhya huṅkāreṇa pratiṣiddhya.
Lord Rāma restrained [Śūrpaṇakhā] by means of a loud threat.1
