Chapter 20: Rāma Kills the Fourteen Rākṣasas
Text 3.20.9
युष्मान्पापात्मकान्हन्तुं विप्रकारान्महाहवे।
ऋषीणां तु नियोगेन प्राप्तोऽहं सशरायुधः॥
yuṣmān pāpātmakān hantuṁ viprakārān mahāhave
ṛṣīṇāṁ tu niyogena prāpto ’haṁ saśarāyudhaḥ
yuṣmān = you; pāpa-ātmakān = sinful; hantum = to kill; viprakārān = and violent [rākṣasas]; mahā-āhave = in a great battle; ṛṣīṇām = of the sages; tu = but; niyogena = on the request; prāptaḥ = have come; aham = I; sa-śara-āyudhaḥ = with My arrows and weapons.
But on the request of the sages, I have come with My arrows and weapons to kill you sinful and violent [rākṣasas] in a great battle.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: viprakārān hiṁsakān bhavatāṁ prathama-pravṛttim ākāṅkṣan sthito ’smīty arthaḥ.
Viprakārān (“violent”) indicates that Lord Śrī Rāma waited for them to take the first step [by attacking Him].1
