Text 3.26.1

dūṣaṇas tu svakaṁ sainyaṁ hanyamānaṁ nirīkṣya ca
sandideśa mahā-bāhur bhīma-vegān durāsadān
rākṣasān pañca sāhasrān samareṣv anivartinaḥ

dūṣaṇaḥ tu = Dūṣaṇa; svakam = his; sainyam = of army; hanyamānam = the destruction; nirīkṣya ca = upon noticing; sandideśa = deputed; mahā-bāhuḥ = the mighty-armed; bhīma-vegān = they were fierce in their attack; durāsadān = and so they were difficult to conquer; rākṣasān = rākṣasas; pañca = five; sāhasrān = thousand; samareṣu = from battle; anivartinaḥ = they never returned.

Upon noticing the destruction of his army, the mighty-armed Dūṣaṇa deputed five thousand rākṣasas. They were fierce in their attack, they never returned from battle, and so they were difficult to conquer.

This chapter describes the destruction of the entire army led by Dūṣaṇa.

Ca indicates that Dūṣaṇa was also distressed [upon noticing the destruction of his army]. The rākṣasas were fierce in their attack, that is, they rushed forth in a terrifying manner. That Duṣaṇa sent five thousand rākṣasas indicates that five thousand had already been killed. Out of the fourteen thousand rākṣasas, the first batch of five thousand rākṣasas had been killed by Lord Rāma. Dūṣaṇa then sent a second batch of five thousand rākṣasas.
