Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 27: Rāma Kills Triśirā
Text 3.27.8

शरधारासमूहान्स महामेघ इवोत्सृजन्।
व्यसृजत्सदृशं नादं जलार्द्रस्य तु दुन्दुभेः॥

śara-dhārā-samūhān sa mahā-megha ivotsṛjan
vyasṛjat sadṛśaṁ nādaṁ jalārdrasya tu dundubheḥ

śara-dhārā-samūhān = showers of arrows; saḥ = he; mahā-meghaḥ = a great cloud; iva = like; utsṛjan = released; vyasṛjat = and made; sadṛśam = similar to; nādam = a sound; jala-ārdrasya tu = that of a wet; dundubheḥ = dundubhi.

Like a great cloud, he released showers of arrows and made a sound similar to that of a wet dundubhi.

This indicates that the sound was low-pitched.1

GLOSS. This verse can also mean: “Like a great cloud releasing showers of rainwater, he made a sound similar to that of a wet dundubhi.”2

1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: jalārdrasyety anenāsya hīna-svaratvam uktam.

2 Rāmāyaṇa-bhāva-dīpa: megha-pakṣe śara-śabda udaka-vācī.
