Chapter 31: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation with Akampana and Mārīca
Text 3.31.31
तस्यापहर भार्यां त्वं प्रमथ्य तु महावने।
सीतया रहितः कामी रामो हास्यति जीवितम्॥
tasyāpahara bhāryāṁ tvaṁ pramathya tu mahā-vane
sītayā rahitaḥ kāmī rāmo hāsyati jīvitam
tasya = his; apahara = and kidnap; bhāryām = wife; tvam pramathya tu = make [Him] wander about; mahā-vane = in the great forest; sītayā = Sītā; rahitaḥ = without; kāmī = passionate; rāmaḥ = Rāma; hāsyati = will give up; jīvitam = His life.
Make [Him] wander about in the great forest and kidnap His wife!1 Without Sītā, passionate Rāma will give up His life.
1 Rāmāyaṇa-bhūṣaṇa: pramathya viloḍya.
Akampana intended to tell Rāvaṇa, “Somehow or other, deceive Rāma [and kidnap His wife]!”
