Chapter 32: Śūrpaṇakhā Goes to Meet Rāvaṇa
Text 3.32.15
वनं चैत्ररथं दिव्यं नलिनीं नन्दनं वनम्।
विनाशयति यः क्रोधाद्देवोद्यानानि वीर्यवान्॥
vanaṁ caitrarathaṁ divyaṁ nalinīṁ nandanaṁ vanam
vināśayati yaḥ krodhād devodyānāni vīryavān
vanam = forest; caitraratham = Caitraratha; divyam = the celestial; nalinīm = [the lake] Nalinī; nandanam = Nandana; vanam = the forest; vināśayati = had destroyed; yaḥ = Rāvaṇa; krodhāt = in anger; deva-udyānāni = and the gardens of the devas; vīryavān = the powerful.
In anger, the powerful Rāvaṇa had destroyed the celestial forest Caitraratha, [the lake] Nalinī, the forest Nandana and the gardens of the devas.
Nalinī is Kuvera’s lake. Nandana is Indra’s garden. “The gardens of the devas” refer to other gardens.
