Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.2
प्रमत्तः कामभोगेषु स्वैरवृत्तो निरङ्कुशः।
समुत्पन्नं भयं घोरं बोद्धव्यं नावबुध्यसे॥
pramattaḥ kāma-bhogeṣu svaira-vṛtto niraṅkuśaḥ
samutpannaṁ bhayaṁ ghoraṁ boddhavyaṁ nāvabudhyase
pramattaḥ = you are careless; kāma-bhogeṣu = amidst a variety of sense enjoyments; svaira-vṛttaḥ = acting as you wish; niraṅkuśaḥ = with no restraint [at all]; samutpannam = that has come about; bhayam = danger; ghoram = the terrible; boddhavyam = [though you] should have certainly known; na avabudhyase = you don’t understand.
You are careless, acting as you wish amidst a variety of sense enjoyments with no restraint [at all]. You don’t understand the terrible danger that has come about [though you] should have certainly known!
Rāvaṇa was independent in enjoying his senses, that is, he was constantly under the influence of sense objects. The danger [that was imminent upon him] was terrible, that is, it was frightening even to those who had [already] heard about it. Rāvaṇa was expected to know about it from his spies.
In the next verse, Śūrpaṇakhā points out, in accordance with the ways of the world, the destruction that can come from [such] sense enjoyment.
