Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa

सक्तं ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु कामवृत्तं महीपतिम्।
लुब्धं न बहुमन्यन्ते श्मशानाग्निमिव प्रजाः॥
saktaṁ grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu kāma-vṛttaṁ mahī-patim
lubdhaṁ na bahu manyante śmaśānāgnim iva prajāḥ
saktam = who is attached; grāmyeṣu = to vulgar; bhogeṣu = enjoyments; kāma-vṛttam = given to whimsical acts; mahī-patim = of a king; lubdham = and greedy; na bahu manyante = don’t think highly; śmaśāna-agnim = he were the fire burning in a crematorium; iva = as if; prajāḥ = citizens.
Citizens don’t think highly of a king who is attached to vulgar enjoyments, given to whimsical acts and greedy, as if he were the fire burning in a crematorium.

“Vulgar enjoyments” refers to sexual activity and so on.
GLOSS. “Attached to vulgar enjoyments” refers to enjoying one’s own wives and so on while transgressing the prescribed limits [for such enjoyment].1 “Given to whimsical acts” refers to being obsessed with others’ wives. “Fire burning in a crematorium” refers to the fire that burns a dead body [in a crematorium].
