Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.4
स्वयं कार्याणि यः काले नानुतिष्ठति पार्थिवः।
स तु वै सह राज्येन तैश्च कार्यैर्विनश्यति॥
svayaṁ kāryāṇi yaḥ kāle nānutiṣṭhati pārthivaḥ
sa tu vai saha rājyena taiś ca kāryair vinaśyati
svayam = personally; kāryāṇi = his duties of maintenance and so on; yaḥ = who; kāle = at the right time; na anutiṣṭhati = does not execute; pārthivaḥ = king; saḥ = the; tu vai = certainly; saha = with; rājyena = his kingdom; taiḥ = his; ca = and; kāryaiḥ = duties; vinaśyati = perishes.
The king who does not personally execute his duties at the right time certainly perishes with his kingdom and his duties.1
1 He collapses, and his projects also collapse along with him.
“Duties” refers to duties of maintenance and so on.
