Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.8
त्वं तु बालस्वभावश्च बुद्धिहीनश्च राक्षस।
ज्ञातव्यं तु न जानीषे कथं राजा भविष्यसि॥
tvaṁ tu bāla-svabhāvaś ca buddhi-hīnaś ca rākṣasa
jñātavyaṁ tu na jānīṣe kathaṁ rājā bhaviṣyasi
tvam = you; tu = but; bāla-svabhāvaḥ ca = are childish in nature; buddhi-hīnaḥ = devoid of intelligence; ca = and; rākṣasa = O rākṣasa; jñātavyam tu = what you are supposed to know; na jānīṣe = you don’t know; katham = how; rājā = a king; bhaviṣyasi = can you [continue to] be.
But you are childish in nature and devoid of intelligence. O rākṣasa, you don’t know what you are supposed to know! How can you [continue to] be a king?
“Childish in nature” indicates that he was devoid of discrimination. “Devoid of intelligence” indicates that he was devoid of [the sort of] intelligence that generates discrimination.
