Canto 3 -
Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 33: Śūrpaṇakhā Criticizes Rāvaṇa
Text 3.33.10
यस्मात्पश्यन्ति दूरस्थान्सर्वानर्थान्नराधिपाः।
चारेण तस्मादुच्यन्ते राजानो दीर्घचक्षुषः॥
yasmāt paśyanti dūrasthān sarvān arthān narādhipāḥ
cāreṇa tasmād ucyante rājāno dīrgha-cakṣuṣaḥ
yasmāt = because; paśyanti = see; dūrasthān = [happening] far away; sarvān arthān = everything; nara-adhipāḥ = those rulers of men; cāreṇa = through their spies; tasmāt1 ucyante = are said; rājānaḥ = kings; dīrgha-cakṣuṣaḥ = to be foresighted.
Kings are said to be foresighted because those rulers of men see everything [happening] far away through their spies.
1 Technical note: tasmāt ucyante.
Śūrpaṇakhā has so far spoken about the world [in general]. In the next verse, she speaks about Rāvaṇa [himself].
