इति स्वदोषान्परिकीर्तितांस्तया समीक्ष्य बुद्ध्या क्षणदाचरेश्वरः।
धनेन दर्पेण बलेन चान्वितो विचिन्तयामास चिरं स रावणः॥
iti sva-doṣān parikīrtitāṁs tayā
samīkṣya buddhyā kṣaṇadācareśvaraḥ
dhanena darpeṇa balena cānvito
vicintayām āsa ciraṁ sa rāvaṇaḥ
iti = these; sva-doṣān = defects of his; parikīrtitān = as recounted; tayā = by her; samīkṣya = he examined; buddhyā = using his intelligence; kṣaṇadācara-īśvaraḥ = was the lord of the night-rangers; dhanena = wealth; darpeṇa = pride; balena = strength; ca = and; anvitaḥ = he possessed; vicintayām āsa = thought; ciram = for a long time; saḥ = the; rāvaṇaḥ = Rāvaṇa.
Rāvaṇa was the lord of the night-rangers. He possessed wealth, pride and strength. Using his intelligence, he examined these defects of his as recounted by her and thought for a long time.1
1 Rāvaṇa contemplated for long because Mārīca told him to avoid a war with Lord Rāma whereas his sister Śūrpaṇakhā instigated him to go to war with Him. Technical note: vicintayām āseti māricaḥ samaro māstv iti brūte, iyaṁ bhaginī tu samaraṁ protsāhayati kim atra kartavyam iti cintayām āsety arthaḥ.
