Araṇya-kāṇḍa
Chapter 34: Rāvaṇa’s Conversation With Śūrpaṇakhā
Text 3.34.4

इत्युक्ता राक्षसेन्द्रेण राक्षसी क्रोधमूर्च्छिता।
ततो रामं यथातत्त्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे॥

ity uktā rākṣasendreṇa rākṣasī krodha-mūrcchitā
tato rāmaṁ yathā-tattvam ākhyātum upacakrame

iti = thus; uktā = spoke; rākṣasa-indreṇa = when the lord of the rākṣasas; rākṣasī = that rākṣasī; krodha-mūrcchitā = became enraged; tataḥ = and; rāmam = concerning Rāma; yathā-tattvam = the facts; ākhyātum = to describe [as follows]; upacakrame = began.

When the lord of the rākṣasas spoke thus, that rākṣasī became enraged and began to describe the facts concerning Rāma [as follows].1

Though Śūrpaṇakhā’s heart was overwhelmed by attraction for Śrī Rāma’s younger brother, the charming appearance of Lord Rāma made her extremely agitated. She briefly describes Lord Rāma’s charm in the text beginning with the following verse.

1 “The facts concerning Rāma” only refers to His charming appearance which will be described immediately hereafter. It does not refer to everything Śūrpaṇakhā says about Him because she will spin her own tale of why she was disfigured.
